Mini Paceman Engine Troubles

Alright, petrolheads, I'm at my wit's end with my 2016 Mini Paceman. Lately, it's been acting like a total lemon. Sometimes the engine won't even start, other times it starts then dies right away, and when it does run, it's rough as guts. I'm suspecting something with the ignition switch, maybe a dodgy ignition coil. I've checked the battery, and that seems fine. Could it be a defective fuse somewhere in the system? Anyone else experience anything similar? Before anyone suggests it: yes, the ignition key is fine. I'm pretty sure it's not the starter motor itself, because when it decides to work, it cranks over strong. Any ideas before I start tearing things apart?

That's a tricky one. I had a similar issue with my old Opel Astra, although the symptoms weren't exactly the same. Mine would sometimes crank but not start, other times it would start and then die immediately. I'm no expert, but have you checked the basics like the battery terminals and the starter motor relay? It might be something simple. Could also be a faulty crankshaft position sensor. That can cause all sorts of weird engine start problems.

Interesting, thanks for the reply. When you say "starter motor relay", where exactly is that located, and how would I go about testing it? Also, did your Opel exhibit any rough running after it started, or was it purely a starting issue? Trying to narrow down possibilities here. I know about the car ignition system but some clarifications would be helpful.

Okay, so the starter motor relay is usually in the fuse box, often under the hood. The owner's manual should have a diagram showing its location. As for testing, you can try swapping it with another identical relay in the fuse box (like the horn relay) to see if that fixes the problem. If the horn doesn't work, but the car starts, then you know the relay is bad. In my case, the Opel only had starting issues, no rough running. Given your Mini's symptoms, it really does sound like an ignition problem. I'd recommend taking it to a reputable workshop; they'll be able to diagnose it properly.

Update for anyone who might stumble across this thread with a similar issue. Took it to the shop. Turns out it was just a defective fuse related to the ignition system. Replaced it, and she's purring like a kitten again. Cost me 52€ for the fuse and labor. Thanks for the input, I appreciate it!
