Thanks for the quick reply! The fan noise is definitely noticeable, louder than usual. I will check the coolant level first thing in the morning. But could a faulty speed sensor really cause the radiator fan to malfunction and lead to the engine overheating?

A faulty speed sensor can cause the car's computer to not properly regulate the fan speed. It's like a thermostat in your house not knowing the temperature. Could be that the fan blade isn't getting the signal to kick on when it should. I'd suggest taking it to a workshop; they can diagnose the issue properly.

Thank you for your advice. It turned out the speed sensor was indeed defective, just like you suggested. The whole repair, including parts and labor, cost me around 250€. Hopefully, this fixes the issue for good!

Overheating and a check engine light on your Mini Paceman is never good. Does the fan noise seem louder than normal? Also, have you checked the coolant level? It's like checking the oil in a car, pretty basic but often overlooked.
