Mini Paceman rough idle and malfunction indicator

I am quite concerned about my 2014 Mini Paceman. The malfunction indicator has illuminated, and I have noticed a significant decrease in fuel efficiency. The engine also has a rough, uneven idle. My car is a gasoline model. Could this be a defective knock sensor? I read somewhere that the cable or plug connection of the component might be the problem. I am really hoping it's not too serious!

That does sound like a defective knock sensor. The symptoms you are describing such as the malfunction indicator being on and the uneven idling are very typical. I experienced a similar issue with my previous vehicle, a Volkswagen Passat. It also had increased fuel consumption. Have you checked the cable and plug connection of the knock sensor? A defective connection is often the culprit.

Thank you for your response. Yes, I did visually inspect the cable and plug, but I couldn't identify any obvious damage. How did you determine the cable was faulty on your Passat?

In my case, the issue with the Passat was difficult to diagnose without proper equipment. While the cable appeared intact, a diagnostic test revealed a fluctuating signal from the knock sensor. The mechanic suspected internal corrosion within the cable. Given your description and the fact that you've already visually inspected the connection, I recommend having a workshop perform a thorough diagnostic test to confirm the issue.

Thank you so much for your insight! I took your advice and brought my Paceman to a workshop. Turns out, the knock sensor cable was indeed faulty, just as you suspected. The repair cost 95€, which I found quite reasonable. The malfunction indicator is now off, and the engine is running smoothly again. I really appreciate your help!
