Mini Roadster Oil Pressure Issue

Experiencing a rather disconcerting issue with my 2012 Mini Roadster diesel, mileage is at 132560 km. The oil pressure warning lamp illuminates intermittently, accompanied by loud mechanical noises emanating from the engine. Given the symptoms, and having considered other possibilities, I'm leaning towards a defect in the oil pump. Am I on the right track here?

Summary of the thread

A 2012 Mini Roadster diesel with 132,560 km is experiencing intermittent oil pressure warning lights and loud mechanical noises from the engine. The issue is suspected to be a defect in the oil pump. While a faulty oil pressure sensor could cause false readings, it is unlikely to cause loud noises, indicating a more serious problem. The recommendation is to seek professional diagnosis and repair to prevent engine damage, and it was confirmed that the oil pump was indeed the issue.

Low oil pressure in your Mini Roadster is a serious concern. Have you checked the oil level and condition? An oil change with a new oil filter is always the first step to rule out a simple oil filter clogged issue. Additionally, the oil pressure sensor could be faulty and giving a false reading. Has the sensor been inspected?

The oil level is fine and I did an oil change recently, though I did not inspect the sensor. If the oil pressure sensor was faulty, would it cause the loud mechanical noises as well? Surely that points to something more serious like potential oil pump failure, doesn't it?

Given the persistent low oil pressure warning and the presence of mechanical noises, it is probable that the oil pump is indeed the source of the problem. A defective oil pressure sensor alone would unlikely cause such loud noises. Continuing to operate the vehicle in this condition is inadvisable. I suggest seeking professional diagnosis and repair immediately to prevent potential engine damage.

Just wanted to provide a quick update. Took the Mini Roadster to a trusted mechanic, and as suspected, it was indeed the oil pump. Replacement and labor came to 755€. Lesson learned: never ignore low oil pressure warnings. Thanks for the input!
