Mini Roadster Overheating and Coolant Leak

I'm officially stumped and frustrated! My 2014 Mini Roadster is throwing a fit. The check engine light is on, the engine is overheating, and to top it off, I'm finding coolant under the car – smells like excessive pressure in the cooling system. A mechanic friend suggested it might be a control unit communication error, possibly a defective cable or plug connection. Has anyone else experienced anything similar? Any ideas before I start tearing things apart?

Wow, that sounds eerily familiar! I had a similar issue with my Mini Cooper – not the Roadster, but still, same brand, so maybe it's a thing? I was getting some weird diagnostic trouble code related to the engine management system, and it turned out to be a faulty sensor connection. Have you checked all the easy-to-reach sensor connections? It might be as simple as a loose plug.

Interesting! Which sensor was causing the problem in your Cooper? And where was it located? I'm reasonably handy with a wrench, so if it's something accessible, I could take a look myself before resorting to the workshop.

Okay, so I dug through my service records. The issue I had was with the coolant temperature sensor. The diagnostic trouble code pointed to that sensor having intermittent connectivity issues. If you're seeing overheating and coolant spills, that sensor, or its wiring, could definitely be the culprit. Honestly, if you're seeing that much coolant, I'd strongly advise getting it to a workshop. Overheating can cause serious damage. But definitely mention the possibility of a faulty sensor connection; it could save you some serious money!

Just wanted to close the loop on this one. You were spot on! Took the Roadster to a local independent shop with car diagnostics capabilities, and they found a connectivity issue with one of the control unit plugs. Wiring issue indeed! They cleaned it up and made sure it was properly seated. Total cost was 95€. Thanks a bunch for your help, you saved me a ton of worry!
