Engine overheating with active grille shutter issues, 2017 MiTo diesel My check engine light recently turned on and the engine started overheating. I suspect an issue with the active air intake system, specifically the grille shutter. The car is a 2017 Alfa Romeo MiTo diesel with 60020km. Has anyone experienced similar thermal management problems? Looking for insights before visiting a mechanic as my last repair experience wasnt great. What should I check first and what repair costs should I expect?

I had the exact same issue on my 2014 Alfa Romeo Giulietta 2.0 diesel. The diagnostic scan revealed a fault code related to the cooling system, specifically the active grille shutter flap motor malfunction. The flap motor stopped responding to the control module, leaving the shutters partially closed. This prevented proper airflow through the radiator, leading to car overheating issues. The temperature gauge would climb steadily during highway driving. The repair required replacing the complete flap motor mechanism along with the control unit. This turned out to be a serious issue that needed immediate attention, as continued driving could have caused engine damage from overheating. Thanks for asking about the costs. The active air flap repair on my Giulietta turned out well. After seeing the mechanic last month, the complete fix of the electromechanism came to 590 Euro. This included the new actuator unit and reprogramming of the thermal management system. Since the repair, the cooling system has been working perfectly. The engine temperature stays stable even during long drives, and the active grille shutter now responds correctly to different driving conditions. The check engine light hasnt returned, and I can actually hear the air flap working when starting the car. The original issue was definitely worth fixing properly, as a malfunctioning active air intake system can lead to more serious engine problems if left unattended. So far, no other cooling-related issues have surfaced, and the car performs much better with proper airflow management.

Just got back from the mechanic and wanted to update. The repair cost me 620 Euro, slightly more than expected but worth every cent. The cooling system is now working perfectly and the check engine light is gone. The mechanic found the grille shutter completely stuck, which explained the overheating. They needed to order a specific control module that took two days to arrive. While waiting, they did a thorough inspection of the entire cooling system and found everything else in good condition. The car runs much better now, no more temperature spikes during drives. The active grille shutters make a satisfying click when starting up, which they never did before. Definitely glad I got this fixed before it caused any serious engine damage. This repair experience was actually quite positive, much better than my previous garage visits. For anyone facing similar issues, dont wait around like I initially did, get it checked right away.
