Modus engine stalling

Hi, I'm having trouble with my 2006 Renault Modus (gasoline engine). Lately, the check engine light has been coming on, and the engine keeps stalling when I'm idling. I checked the error memory and it says something about a problem with the idle air control. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

The 2006 Renault Modus is experiencing engine stalling and a check engine light, with an error code indicating an issue with the idle air control. Possible causes include a heavily contaminated intake affecting the air valve and idle control. Cleaning the intake might resolve the issue, but due to the complexity and potential for further damage, it is recommended to have a professional mechanic diagnose and repair the problem.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

I had a similar issue with my Modus. The idle speed was unstable, and the engine would stall at traffic lights. It could be a heavily contaminated intake. This often affects the air valve and idle control, leading to these symptoms. Did you notice any change in the engine sound when idling?

Thanks for the reply! Now that you mention it, the engine does sound a bit rougher than usual when it's idling. Kind of like it's struggling to keep going. So, you think it's definitely the intake being dirty? Is it something I can clean myself, or is it better to take it to a workshop?

While cleaning the intake yourself is possible, it involves some disassembly and specific cleaning agents. Given the error code points directly to the idle air control valve and the severity of the stalling, I would advise against a DIY approach. A workshop can properly diagnose the issue, including potential damage to the valve itself, and ensure a correct repair. This will probably cost about 425€.

Okay, thanks for the advice. I'll book it in with a mechanic to get it checked out properly. Hopefully, it's just a cleaning job, but better safe than sorry. I appreciate you pointing me in the right direction!
