Modus headlight range control faulty

I've got a 2004 Renault Modus with a diesel engine and I'm having some trouble with the headlights. The range control seems to be faulty. I'm getting an error stored in the memory, plus a warning light on the speedometer. The low beams are either pointing way too low or way too high, it's like there's no happy medium. I've checked the fuses and bulbs, and they seem okay. Any ideas what could be causing this? My mileage is only 60947 km.

Okay, the stored error and erratic beam behavior definitely points to an issue within the auto-leveling system. Has the car had any front end work recently, that might have disturbed the headlight alignment or damaged a sensor? Do you have access to a scan tool to read the specific fault codes? Knowing the exact code would help narrow down the possibilities.

Thanks for the quick reply! No recent front-end work, but I don't have a proper scan tool, just a basic OBD reader, and it doesn't give me any specific codes related to the headlights. Could it be the control module for the lighting system, or maybe the servomotors inside the headlight units themselves?

Given the symptoms, a defective servomotor within one of the headlights is the most probable cause, especially if your reader isn't pulling any relevant codes. The control module is less likely to fail in this manner. I'd advise against further troubleshooting without proper equipment and just take it to a reputable workshop specializing in vehicle lighting systems.

Appreciate the advice. I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on – it was a faulty servomotor in the headlight. Ended up costing me 1040€ to replace. Thanks again for the help!
