I did check the error memory, and it indicates a fault within the steering wheel itself. The car has 158860 km on it. Was your problem also within the steering wheel, or somewhere else in the steering column?

Mine was definitely the steering wheel controls themselves. It wasn't worth messing with, to be honest. Considering the airbags and all that, it's probably best to get it checked out at a workshop. You don't want to risk messing up the whole system.

Thanks for the insight! I took it to the workshop. Turns out it was exactly as I suspected: defective cable connection in the steering wheel. Cost me 95€ to get it sorted. Appreciate the advice!

Yeah, I had something similar happen with my old Opel Astra. The steering controls went dead. Did you check the vehicle diagnostics to see if there's a specific error code related to the steering column or the multifunction steering system? It might give you a better idea.
