Modus rough running exhaust smell

I've got a 2011 Renault Modus with a gasoline engine and 121582 km on the clock. Recently, the check engine light came on, and the engine's running a bit rough. I've also noticed a strong exhaust smell and what sounds like an exhaust leak. Could this be related to the exhaust treatment system? Maybe a defective lambda sensor? Any thoughts before I take it to a shop?

Summary of the thread

A 2011 Renault Modus is experiencing rough running, a strong exhaust smell, and a check engine light. These symptoms could be related to the exhaust treatment system, possibly due to a defective lambda sensor or an exhaust leak. A faulty catalytic converter is also considered, but the focus is on the lambda sensor or a crack in the exhaust manifold. A professional inspection is recommended to diagnose and resolve the issue, which in this case was confirmed to be the lambda sensor.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my old Volvo V70, although the symptoms weren't quite as pronounced. Did you check for any obvious cracks or holes in the exhaust pipe? A visual inspection might give you a clue. Also, have you noticed any change in fuel consumption?

Thanks for the quick reply! I did a quick visual check but didn't spot anything obvious. I'll take another look for cracks or holes. As for fuel consumption, it seems slightly higher than usual, but it's hard to say for sure. Could a faulty catalytic converter cause these symptoms too?

A faulty catalytic converter could definitely be the culprit. However, given the strong exhaust smell and leak, I'd still lean towards something upstream like the lambda sensor or a crack in the exhaust manifold. It's like trying to diagnose a leaky faucet by looking at the flooded bathroom – start at the source! I would recommend getting it checked out by a professional to avoid further damage. In my case it was the lambda sensor and it fixed the rough running as well as the check engine light.

Alright, appreciate the insight! Sounds like a trip to the workshop is in order. Thanks for sharing your experience; it's given me a better idea of what to expect. The repair ended up costing 375€, it was indeed the lambda sensor.
