Modus rough running exhaust smell

Thanks for the quick reply! I did a quick visual check but didn't spot anything obvious. I'll take another look for cracks or holes. As for fuel consumption, it seems slightly higher than usual, but it's hard to say for sure. Could a faulty catalytic converter cause these symptoms too?

A faulty catalytic converter could definitely be the culprit. However, given the strong exhaust smell and leak, I'd still lean towards something upstream like the lambda sensor or a crack in the exhaust manifold. It's like trying to diagnose a leaky faucet by looking at the flooded bathroom – start at the source! I would recommend getting it checked out by a professional to avoid further damage. In my case it was the lambda sensor and it fixed the rough running as well as the check engine light.

Alright, appreciate the insight! Sounds like a trip to the workshop is in order. Thanks for sharing your experience; it's given me a better idea of what to expect. The repair ended up costing 375€, it was indeed the lambda sensor.

Sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my old Volvo V70, although the symptoms weren't quite as pronounced. Did you check for any obvious cracks or holes in the exhaust pipe? A visual inspection might give you a clue. Also, have you noticed any change in fuel consumption?
