Mondeo Brake Fluid Issue

Hi, I've got a strange problem with my 2006 Ford Mondeo, diesel engine, 125k km. The brake fluid level warning light came on. I checked, and it's definitely low. I topped it up, but I'm still getting strange feedback from the brake pedal. Could there be a leak somewhere? I can't see any fluid on the ground though.

I had something similar happen in my Mondeo. Brake fluid disappearing like that... it's like trying to keep water in a sieve. Have you checked your brake pads? If they're worn down, the calipers need more fluid to work, dropping the level in the reservoir.

Worn brake pads, you say? How can worn brake pads cause low brake fluid? Wouldn't I be hearing a horrible grinding noise if they were totally shot?

Yes, low brake fluid can result from worn brake pads, and no, you might not hear the grinding immediately. As the pads wear, the pistons in your calipers extend further to maintain contact with the rotors. This requires more fluid from the reservoir. I suggest you get them checked by a workshop soon.

Thanks, that makes sense. I took it to a workshop, and you were spot on. Worn brakes were the culprit. It cost me 480€, ouch! At least it’s sorted now.
