MR2 Transmission Oil Pressure Fault

My 2006 Toyota MR2 gasoline engine is throwing codes. Getting engine and transmission warning lights. Error memory shows a transmission oil pressure sensor fault. It's going into emergency mode, shifts are unclean, and there's some grinding. Mileage is 22676 km. Could low oil be the culprit?

Sounds like it. When the gearbox oil level is too low, the oil pump can't maintain proper pressure. This causes the pressure sensor to report faults, triggering the warning lights and limp mode. Have you checked the gearbox oil level?

Where is the fill point, and how do I check it? Is there a dipstick, or do I need to remove a plug? How critical is the oil type?

No dipstick on that transmission. You'll find a fill plug on the side of the gearbox. Remove it. The oil level should be right at the bottom of the hole; you should just see it. Type is crucial; check your manual for the exact spec. Honestly, with those symptoms, you should take it to a workshop. They can diagnose it properly and ensure the correct oil is used.

Thanks for the info. Took it to a shop; you were right. Low oil, causing pressure sensor issues. Repair, including oil change and sensor check, cost 365€. Runs fine now.
