Mustang Mach-E transfer case oil wear fault
Summary of the thread
A 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E owner reported issues with the gearbox slipping and shifting uncleanly, with diagnostics indicating a transfer case oil wear fault. The problem could potentially be resolved with a simple oil change if the fluid is just dirty, but if there are defective gears, professional repair might be necessary. After further inspection, it was confirmed that the issue was indeed due to defective gears, and the owner opted for professional repair.

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't spotted any obvious oil leakage, but I'll double-check more thoroughly. Regarding the fluid, I haven't drained any to inspect it closely. If it does turn out to be defective gears in the transfer case, is that a repair best left to a professional, or is it something a reasonably handy person could tackle? What are the chances that it is indeed defective gears?

Based on the symptoms and the diagnostic code, defective gears in the transfer case are definitely a possibility. It's hard to say for sure without a proper inspection. Honestly, messing with a transfer case is a pretty involved job. Unless you've got solid experience with gearboxes, I'd recommend getting it checked out by a workshop. They can confirm the problem and give you a proper quote.

Appreciate the advice. I'll take your word for it and get it booked in at a shop. It was indeed defective gears, and the repair cost 330€. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!

Interesting. With that mileage, it could be a few things. Has there been any oil leakage near the transfer case? What does the transfer fluid look like? Is it dark or have any metallic flakes in it? If it's just dirty, an oil change with the correct transfer fluid might help, but if there is structural damage, maybe not.
