Nissan Dayz poor starting and stalling

My 2016 Nissan Dayz with a gasoline engine is starting poorly, and sometimes it even stalls when idling. The check engine light is on. It's got about 20228 km on it. I suspect it might be the camshaft sensor. Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Summary of the thread

A 2016 Nissan Dayz is experiencing poor starting and stalling issues, with the check engine light on. The suspected cause is a faulty camshaft sensor, potentially due to a damaged encoder wheel. Testing the sensor with a multimeter or consulting a technician is advised to confirm the diagnosis. Repairing the encoder wheel and replacing the sensor resolved the issue, restoring smooth engine operation.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Interesting. I own a Dayz as well, though I haven't run into those exact symptoms. When my camshaft sensor started acting up, the primary indicator was significant engine misfire at higher RPMs, almost like the engine was struggling to maintain power. Did you try testing the sensor itself? Perhaps a multimeter check or even swapping it out temporarily with a known good sensor to see if the problem persists? Any recent work done on the engine that might have disturbed the sensor or its wiring?

I haven't tested the sensor directly with a multimeter yet, but that's a good idea. When your camshaft sensor went bad, did the check engine light also come on? And did your mechanic mention anything about the encoder wheel on the camshafts being a possible culprit? I've read that can cause similar issues.

Yes, the check engine light illuminated immediately. Regarding the encoder wheel, that's exactly what my mechanic pointed to. Apparently, a defect there was causing the sensor to send erratic signals. Given your symptoms and the potential encoder wheel issue, I'd strongly suggest having a qualified technician diagnose it thoroughly. It's likely a sensor failure, but the root cause might be the encoder wheel itself. Delaying could lead to further issues.

I took it to the workshop, and you were spot on. The camshaft sensor was indeed defective because the encoder wheel was damaged. The final repair cost was around 695€. Now the engine runs smoothly again!
