Nissan Note oil pump failure

Hi, I have a 2014 Nissan Note diesel with 194724 km. Recently, the oil pressure warning lamp lights up and there are loud mechanical noises from the engine. Could it be a defect in the oil pump?

Summary of the thread

A 2014 Nissan Note diesel with 194,724 km is experiencing an oil pressure warning light and loud mechanical noises, suggesting a potential oil pump defect. Possible causes include low oil levels, incorrect oil viscosity, or a malfunctioning oil pressure sensor, but these were ruled out. The presence of metallic particles in the oil could indicate failing engine bearings, exacerbating the issue. The recommended solution is to have the vehicle professionally diagnosed and repaired, as continued operation could lead to severe engine damage. Ultimately, the problem was confirmed to be an oil pump failure, which was repaired at a cost.

Hello there! I also own a Nissan Note. Your description sounds eerily familiar. I'd suggest checking a few things. First, what's the oil level like? Low oil can trigger the pressure warning. Also, when was the last time you changed your engine oil and what viscosity grade did you use? Using the wrong viscosity can also affect oil pressure. An oil pressure sensor malfunction is less likely, but possible. Finally, those noises are concerning. Have you checked the engine oil for metallic particles, as these could indicate failing engine bearings, which would definitely affect oil pressure!

Thanks for the quick reply! The oil level is fine, and I changed the oil recently, using the grade recommended in the owner's manual. How would I check for metallic particles in the oil?

Right, if the oil level and grade are correct, that does point more towards a serious issue. Checking for metallic particles involves draining the oil and examining it closely, maybe even running it through a filter or using a magnet to attract any metal. However, given the noises you're hearing and the oil pressure light, continuing to run the engine could cause catastrophic damage. I'd strongly recommend getting it to a workshop for a professional diagnosis. It does sound like the oil pump is failing, and if that's the case, the engine isn't getting enough lubrication, which is very bad news. I had a similar problem years ago, and I ignored it, and it cost me a lot more to fix later. If it is the oil pump failure, it is quite possible that the engine bearings are already damaged.

Thanks a lot for your help! I took it to the workshop, and you were right - it was the oil pump. The repair cost me 755€, but at least it's fixed now.
