Nissan Patrol check engine light fuel consumption
Summary of the thread
A 2008 Nissan Patrol with a diesel engine is experiencing a check engine light and increased fuel consumption. The issue may be related to the inlet VANOS mechanics, potentially involving a camshaft solenoid valve or power supply problem. It is suggested to check for engine misfires and oil sludge, as these can affect the variable timing system. Professional diagnosis is recommended to prevent further engine damage, with potential repair costs around 250€.

Thanks for the reply. I haven't checked for engine misfires specifically, but I will do that now. Where exactly should I look for the oil sludge? Is there a specific area prone to this?

In my case, the issue was the inlet camshaft being affected. I strongly suggest you have a professional diagnose it, as ignoring a VANOS failure can lead to more serious engine damage, eventually. The repair shop will be able to easily check for oil sludge. I was quoted around 250€ for repairs.

Thank you for the information. I appreciate the advice, and will take it to a workshop for a checkup as soon as possible. I understand the eventual repair cost will be around 250€ to replace the faulty solenoid. Thanks again!

I own a Patrol as well and had similar symptoms. The check engine light and increased fuel consumption are definitely concerning. Did you by any chance check for any engine misfires or oil sludge? That can affect the variable timing system.
