Odyssey Oxygen Sensor Issue

Hello, I have a 2002 Honda Odyssey with a gasoline engine. Recently, the check engine light came on, and I noticed higher fuel consumption. I checked the error memory, and it indicates a problem with the oxygen sensor. I visually inspected the sensor, and the cable and plug connections appear to be okay. Any ideas?

Summary of the thread

A 2002 Honda Odyssey is experiencing a check engine light and increased fuel consumption, with an error code indicating an oxygen sensor issue. Despite the sensor's connections appearing intact, the sensor itself may be aged and malfunctioning. It is suggested to have the sensor professionally tested and possibly replaced, as it may not be functioning correctly due to age and mileage.

I also own an Odyssey, though not the same year. I had similar symptoms. It could be the oxygen sensor itself is aged and not responding correctly, even if the connections look fine. Think of it like an old light bulb that still looks intact but doesn't shine as brightly anymore. Has the sensor ever been replaced?

Thanks for the quick reply. No, I haven't replaced the oxygen sensor before. Given the mileage, is it something that needs replacing anyway? Is there a way to test the functionality of such an exhaust sensor?

Yes, with that mileage, an aged oxygen sensor is quite plausible; they don't last forever. While visual inspection sometimes helps, the error stored strongly suggests sensor malfunction. A workshop will verify the signals. I would recommend having it checked professionally; it’s like trying to diagnose a computer issue without the right software. They have proper tools and might identify additional issues within the exhaust system.

Okay, thanks for the insight. I'll take it to a workshop and have them check the oxygen sensor and exhaust system. The estimated cost will be around 95€. Appreciate the advice.
