Opel Insignia check engine light, power loss, probably defective EGR valve

Hello everyone, I have a 2012 Opel Insignia Diesel with 104567 km on the clock. At the moment I have some problems with the car: Check Engine Light is on, engine stops by itself from time to time, loss of power, rough engine running, strong exhaust smell and vibrations at idle. Could this be due to the EGR valve? I had a bad experience at the mechanic last time, so I'd rather ask here first: Has anyone had similar symptoms and what was the cause in your case? And how was it with your mechanic when it came to the EGR valve? Thanks for your help!

Summary of the thread

The conversation centers around a 2012 Opel Insignia Diesel experiencing issues such as the Check Engine Light being on, engine stalling, power loss, rough running, strong exhaust smell, and vibrations at idle. These symptoms suggest a potentially defective or stuck EGR valve, which can disrupt engine performance by improperly recirculating exhaust gases. A similar case with an Opel Astra was resolved by replacing the EGR valve and cleaning the intake tract, leading to restored engine performance. It is recommended to have the EGR valve checked and possibly replaced to address these issues.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, I had a 2015 Opel Astra Diesel and had similar symptoms to yours. In my case, the EGR valve was defective or stuck. The signs were also Check Engine Light, loss of power and uneven engine running. The EGR valve is responsible for returning part of the exhaust gases to the intake tract, and if it's stuck, the engine won't run properly. The mechanic replaced the defective EGR valve and cleaned the intake tract. It was no small task because they first had to partially dismantle the component to get to it properly. But once that was done, the engine ran smoothly again, no more vibrations and no more loss of power. If you have similar symptoms, I would definitely have the EGR valve checked. Hope this helps you!

Hey, thanks for your reply! Do you remember how much the repair cost? And have you experienced anything similar since then or did everything go smoothly? Greetings

Hey, I'm glad I could help you. Yes, I remember that the repair cost a total of €355. Most of it was for replacing the defective EGR valve and the associated cleaning. I haven't had any more problems since then. The engine is running great again, no more Check Engine Light, no more vibrations and the power is back. Fortunately, all the trouble disappeared after the valve was replaced. If you have similar symptoms, I would really get it checked as soon as possible. It's annoying, but after the repair, everything will run smoothly again. All the best and hopefully your problem will be solved soon! Greetings

Hey, thanks for the info! That sounds like a really expensive thing to do, but if it really works better afterwards, it would be worth it. I'm a little reassured that you haven't had any problems since. I'll see if I can find a trustworthy mechanic to take a closer look at the EGR valve. I had really bad luck at the mechanic last time. They just changed something quickly and I still had problems. I hope it goes better this time. Keep your fingers crossed for me! Thanks again for your advice and experience! Greetings
