Orlando water sensor malfunction

Hi, I have a 2016 Chevrolet Orlando diesel with only 25905 km on the clock, and the check engine light is on. I read the error memory, and it points to a water sensor malfunction. The engine also runs a bit rough sometimes. Could it really be the sensor already?

Summary of the thread

A 2016 Chevrolet Orlando diesel with low mileage is experiencing a check engine light due to a water sensor malfunction, accompanied by occasional rough engine performance. While the error code suggests a sensor issue, it may be caused by electrical problems such as damaged or loose wiring and connectors leading to the sensor. Inspecting these connections for damage or corrosion is recommended, and if unsure, consulting a mechanic is advised to prevent further issues.

My experience with a similar issue on a 2018 Opel Insignia suggests that you should not immediately assume the sensor itself is faulty. Although the error code indicates a water sensor malfunction, the symptoms you describe can often stem from related electrical problems. Have you inspected the wiring and connector leading to the sensor? A defective cable or plug connection can trigger such errors. It is less common for sensors to fail outright at such low mileage; however, environmental exposure accelerates it.

Thanks for the tip! Where exactly should I be looking for the cable and plug connection you're talking about? I'm not super familiar with auto electronics.

Certainly. The water sensor is typically located in the fuel filter housing. Examine the wiring harness leading to the sensor connector for any signs of damage, corrosion, or loose connections. Gently wiggle the connector while the engine is running (proceed with caution and ensure safe working conditions); if the engine's performance changes or the error light flickers, it indicates a probable connectivity issue. If you are uncomfortable performing these checks, I recommend consulting a qualified mechanic to avoid causing further damage. I had the same issue and needed to go to the workshop.

Thanks, I appreciate the detailed explanation. I'll check the connections myself, but I think I'll end up taking it to a workshop. The error code indicates the same cause as yours, and the repair bill was only 95€ in the end. So hopefully, it's the same in my case!
