Overheating problems with BMW 1 Series Diesel (2008): Suspected defective auxiliary heater

Hi guys, I need your advice. My BMW 1 Series from 2008 with a diesel engine and almost 300,000 kilometers on the clock has a warning light in the speedometer. My car is also overheating. I suspect the problem could be due to a faulty auxiliary heater. Have any of you ever had symptoms like this and can tell me what was done and what the mechanic did? I really don't want another disaster like the last time... Thanks in advance for your experiences and insights!

Summary of the thread

A 2008 BMW 1 Series Diesel is experiencing overheating issues, with a warning light appearing on the speedometer. The suspected cause is a faulty auxiliary heater. A similar case with a BMW 3 Series involved a broken electric auxiliary heater, which required repair and a check of the entire cooling system. The suggested solution is to have the car inspected by a mechanic to confirm the issue and prevent further damage.

Hello, I recently had a similar problem with my 2010 BMW 3 Series. The warning light in my speedometer also came on and the temperature display kept rising. As you suspected, my electric auxiliary heater was broken. That was quite a job, as a hot engine can affect and damage many important components of the car. The mechanic also checked the entire cooling system and everything was ok. Good luck with that, hopefully everything will be okay again soon.

Hey, thanks for your quick reply and tips. Do you remember how much the repair cost you in total? And have any other problems occurred since then or has everything settled down again? Greetings!

Hey, no problem, you're welcome! In my case, the repair of the defective electric auxiliary heater cost around €350. I was also quite relieved that the price wasn't even higher. But since the mechanic fixed it, everything has been working perfectly again. So don't worry, I'm sure it will settle down for you too. Cheer up and have a good trip, Digga!

Thank you very much for the information and the positive feedback, that really helped and reassured me. I'll take my car straight to the garage tomorrow and have it checked. I hope it's nothing worse and that I can cover it with my budget. Thanks again and have a trouble-free journey! Ciao!
