Palio Overheating Check Engine Light

I'm having an issue with my 2003 Fiat Palio diesel. The check engine light comes on and the engine overheats. It seems to be related to the active air flap. I suspect the electromechanism is defective. Has anyone else experienced this?

Summary of the thread

A 2003 Fiat Palio diesel was experiencing engine overheating and a check engine light, suspected to be linked to a faulty active air flap. The issue was confirmed by a fault code indicating a problem with the flap motor. The suggested solution was to replace the defective electromechanism, which was successfully done, resolving the overheating problem.

Indeed, the symptoms you describe are quite indicative of a fault within the active air flap system. The check engine light illuminating in conjunction with engine overheating strongly suggests that the air flap is not functioning as intended. May I inquire as to whether you have retrieved any fault codes using an OBD-II scanner? Knowing the specific code(s) would greatly assist in narrowing down the potential causes and confirming the diagnosis.

Yes, I have. The fault code points to a problem with the flap motor itself. Is this a common issue, and is replacement the only real solution?

The fault code indicating a malfunction in the flap motor is quite telling. While other factors could theoretically contribute, the preponderance of evidence suggests a defective electromechanism. Given the age of the vehicle and the mileage, component degradation is certainly plausible. Replacement of the faulty unit is the most prudent course of action. I would strongly advise consulting with a qualified automotive technician to ensure proper diagnosis and repair. It is also possible that a software installation is necessary after replacing the part.

Thank you for the confirmation. I took it to a shop and they confirmed the flap motor was defective. The repair cost 590€ to replace the electromechanism and fix the overheating. All good now.
