Palisade cylinder pressure fluctuation

Hey, I'm having a weird issue with my 2019 Hyundai Palisade diesel. It's got almost 190,000 km on it. Lately, I've noticed the fuel consumption is way up, the engine feels like it's lost power, and the check engine light is on. I took it to a mechanic, and they said there's a cylinder pressure fluctuation, but they're scratching their heads about the root cause, suggesting it's a knock-on effect from something else. Any ideas? Could it be something crankshaft, engine knocking, head gasket, timing belt or camshaft related? I'm trying to get ahead of this before it bankrupts me!

Summary of the thread

A 2019 Hyundai Palisade diesel with nearly 190,000 km was experiencing increased fuel consumption, loss of engine power, and a check engine light, with a mechanic identifying cylinder pressure fluctuation but unsure of the root cause. A suggestion was made to check the mass airflow sensor, which was found to be faulty and causing the issues. Replacing the sensor resolved the problem, and the repair was covered under warranty.

I had something similar happen with my Palisade. The symptoms sound a lot like when my mass airflow sensor went bad, causing consequential errors. Made the engine run rough and threw a bunch of codes related to cylinder pressure. Any chance they checked that?

Interesting! I'll ask them about the mass airflow sensor. Was your fuel consumption as bad as mine? I'm practically watching the fuel gauge drop. Also, did your mechanic have trouble pinpointing the original issue like mine? Because I am lost here. I can't keep driving it like this.

Yeah, the fuel consumption was terrible, like pouring money down the drain. And yes, they initially chased a bunch of cylinder-related issues before figuring out it was the sensor messing everything up. Honestly, I'd suggest taking it to a different workshop if your current one is stumped. A fresh set of eyes might catch something they missed. It's always worth a try, as a second opinion never killed anyone.

Thanks a million for the advice! I mentioned the mass airflow sensor to my mechanic, and you were spot on. Turns out it was faulty and causing all sorts of downstream problems. Replacing it completely fixed the cylinder pressure issue and all the other symptoms. And the best thing? It was covered under warranty! So, a big fat 0€ bill. I really appreciate you sharing your experience, you saved me a fortune!
