Palisade engine overheating error
Summary of the thread
A 2023 Hyundai Palisade diesel with 41,000 km is experiencing an engine overheating error, raising concerns about a potential faulty thermostat. However, the issue might also be related to the exhaust or vacuum system, specifically a malfunctioning bypass valve. A vacuum leak could be contributing to the problem, and a proper diagnosis at a workshop is recommended. Ultimately, the issue was identified as a minor vacuum line problem, which was resolved without significant cost.

Thanks for the quick response! No strange smells or changes in fuel economy that I've noticed. Exhaust and vacuum system issues sound expensive... What does that bypass valve actually do? Could a simple vacuum leak cause the error code and the overheating, or is that wishful thinking?

The bypass valve regulates pressure within the exhaust system, and yes, a vacuum leak could contribute to its malfunction, potentially triggering the error and contributing to overheating, though it's often a consequential error resulting from another issue. But to be certain, I would recommend getting it properly diagnosed at a workshop. They can read the specific error code and perform tests to pinpoint the root cause.

Thanks so much for the advice! I took it to the shop, and you were spot on – it was a minor vacuum line issue causing the bypass valve error. The repair cost was nothing! I really appreciate you pointing me in the right direction; I was fearing the worst!

That sounds concerning. While a thermostat issue is possible, on modern diesels, overheating combined with an error code could also point to something within the exhaust or vacuum system causing the bypass valve to malfunction. Have you noticed any changes in fuel economy or any unusual smells?
