Passat ABS Light + Traction Issues Need Expert Help

My ABS warning light recently came on and I noticed the traction control acting strange on wet roads. The speedometer seems accurate but I suspect there might be a speed sensor issue causing these problems. Really want to avoid another sketchy mechanic experience. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their 2017 Passat Hybrid (80000km)? Looking for suggestions on what to check and recommendations for getting it properly diagnosed.

Had similar issues with a 2020 Passat GTE Hybrid. The symptoms matched exactly, ABS light, erratic traction control, though the odometer and speedometer readings remained accurate. The root cause was a faulty wheel speed sensor feeding incorrect input to the ECM. The sensor deterioration affected both the ABS and stability control systems. When the sensor started failing, it sent inconsistent signals to the dashboard control module. The repair involved replacing the front right wheel speed sensor and recalibrating the ABS control unit. While not a major mechanical issue, this definitely requires proper diagnostic equipment and expertise. The ABS module stores specific error codes that point to which sensor is malfunctioning. Recommend getting it checked soon, as driving with compromised ABS and traction control systems increases safety risks, especially in wet conditions. A qualified workshop should be able to confirm the diagnosis through their diagnostic scanner and verify if any other related components need attention. The repair was straightforward once properly diagnosed, taking about 2 hours for the complete job including testing.

Thanks for sharing your experience. Since we had such similar sensor issues with our Passats, I am really curious about the repair costs. When the malfunction first appeared, I was worried it would be a major transmission problem, but thankfully the diagnostic showed it was just the wheel speed sensor. Would you mind sharing how much you paid for the complete fix? Also, has the ABS system been working properly since the repair, or have you noticed any other dashboard warning lights?

The repair bill came to 1000€ to fix the affected control unit that was causing the speed signal fault. This was actually more than I initially expected, but it included comprehensive diagnostic testing, parts, and labor. Since the repair, the ABS system has been working flawlessly. No more warning lights on the dashboard and the traction control behaves normally again, even during wet weather driving. The mechanic ran a full system check after the fix to ensure all control modules were communicating properly. The investment was worth it for the peace of mind, especially knowing the car's safety systems are functioning as designed. The original malfunction seemed scary at first, but having a proper diagnostic done helped identify the exact issue with the control unit rather than jumping to conclusions about major transmission problems. If your repair quote is significantly different from this, it might be worth getting a second opinion, as pricing can vary between workshops based on their diagnostic approach and parts sourcing.

Thanks for the advice. I finally got the car checked out. What a relief, it turned out to be exactly the same sensor issue you described. The mechanic found the faulty wheel speed sensor right away using their diagnostic equipment. Total cost was 850€, which included the new sensor, labor, and a full ABS system calibration. The repair took about 3 hours since they did some extra testing to make sure no other components were affected. Been driving for a week now and everything works perfectly, no more ABS warnings or traction control oddities. Even took it out in the rain yesterday to test it properly. Really glad I got it sorted quickly instead of waiting. The malfunction could have been dangerous in an emergency braking situation. Definitely learned my lesson about not ignoring dashboard warning lights, especially ones related to safety systems.
