Pathfinder Battery Sensor Issue

I'm having issues with my 2002 Nissan Pathfinder diesel. It only has 47546 km on the clock! Lately, it's been struggling to start, like the battery is super weak. And the lights are flickering like crazy, sometimes dimming really low. I'm thinking it might be a bad battery sensor causing some kind of low voltage issue. Has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on where to start? I'm not very good with cars, so any help would be amazing!

Summary of the thread

A 2002 Nissan Pathfinder diesel with low mileage was experiencing starting issues and flickering lights, suspected to be due to a weak battery. The problem was thought to be a faulty battery sensor causing low voltage. It was suggested to check the battery voltage and sensor, but without the proper tools, a visit to a workshop was recommended. The issue was confirmed to be a defective battery sensor, which was replaced, resolving the starting and lighting problems.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Sounds familiar! I had similar issues with my Pathfinder. Weak starts and the lights doing a disco impression. Check your battery voltage. Could be a defective battery sensor messing with the whole system. Do you have a multimeter to test it, or have you tried any basic battery maintenance like cleaning the terminals?

Thanks for the quick reply! I don't have a multimeter, unfortunately. Where exactly is the battery sensor located? And how do I test the battery voltage if I don't have the right tools? Is it something I can visually inspect, or is it more technical than that? I am not sure how to do battery testing.

Yeah, without a multimeter, it's tricky to pinpoint the exact problem. The sensor is usually right on the battery itself, or very close to it. Given the flickering lights and weak starts, it's likely the sensor is giving false readings, causing low voltage. Honestly, I'd take it to a workshop. A faulty sensor can cause havoc and isn't worth the headache. Better safe than sorry, eh?

Okay, thanks so much for the advice! I took it to a local shop, and you were spot on! The battery sensor was indeed defective, causing all sorts of low voltage problems. They replaced it, and the total repair cost was around 315€. Now she starts like a dream, and no more flickering lights! Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!
