Peugeot 106 Crankshaft Sensor Defect

I'm having some issues with my 2003 Peugeot 106 diesel. The check engine light is on, and I'm experiencing reduced engine power, poor response, and higher fuel consumption. VCDS is showing a 'Crankshaft to Camshaft Reference Value' error. I'm leaning towards a defective crank sensor, especially given the mileage (32153 km). Anyone seen this before?

Sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my 106. Have you checked the timing belt? If it's worn or misaligned, it can throw off the engine synchronization and cause that error. When was the belt last changed?

Timing belt was replaced about 20000km ago. Could it still be the culprit? Wouldn't a misaligned timing belt cause other issues like misfires or rough idling?

Even with a relatively new belt, it could be off a tooth. However, considering the specific error code and your symptoms, the crank sensor is the more likely culprit. I'd strongly advise getting it checked out professionally to avoid further issues.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to the shop, and you were spot on – the crankshaft sensor was defective. Replaced it, and everything is back to normal. Cost me 340€ including labour. Appreciate the help!
