Interesting. Would a clogged air filter really cause all those symptoms, including smoke during acceleration?

Well, a completely clogged filter on its own might not cause all the symptoms, especially the smoke. However, a partially clogged filter can mess with the air/fuel mixture. The engine's computer (ECU) relies on the MAF sensor to know how much air is entering the engine. If the sensor is giving incorrect readings due to the restricted airflow, the ECU might inject too much fuel, which could lead to incomplete combustion and smoke. Given all your symptoms, I think it's highly likely the MAF sensor is the culprit, even if the filter is partially to blame. I replaced my MAF sensor and the problem was instantly resolved. It is probably best to visit a workshop to confirm your suspicion.

Thank you for the detailed feedback. The diagnosis was indeed a defective mass air flow sensor. The repair, including replacing the sensor, cost 365€.

Sounds familiar! I had similar symptoms with my old Opel Astra – though it was a diesel. Higher fuel consumption, engine hesitating... It turned out to be a faulty MAF sensor too. Have you checked your air filter? A dirty air filter can sometimes cause issues with the mass air flow, as the engine tries to compensate for the reduced air intake. Cleaning it might help, or it might just need replacing.
