Peugeot 206 diesel DPF issue

My 2002 Peugeot 206 diesel has reduced engine power and smokes when accelerating. It has 115657 km on it. The engine light is on. I think the DPF might be bad. Could a faulty sensor cause this? Could excessive backpressure damage the engine? Would a vehicle inspection help? I might need DPF cleaning.

I had a similar problem with my Peugeot 206, but it was a petrol model. Reduced power and smoke sound like classic DPF issues. It could be a sensor, but usually the DPF is clogged. Check the backpressure to be sure.

Thanks. When you say 'check the backpressure,' how is this done? What readings would show a DPF problem?

Checking backpressure needs a gauge to measure exhaust restriction. A workshop is best for this. High backpressure means a blockage. Given the symptoms and mileage, a bad DPF is likely. Check the sensor too. New DPFs are expensive, so be ready to replace it.

Thanks for the advice. I took it to a workshop, and they said the DPF is defective and needs replacing. The repair cost 1550€. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
