Thanks. Is the gearbox oil level easy to check, or is it best left to a professional with special equipment?

On the Megane, the fill plug was tricky to access. Unless you're comfortable working under the car and know the proper procedure, I'd recommend having a workshop check the oil level. It's a quick job for them, and they can advise you on any leaks.

Turns out the issue was low gearbox oil, probably from a broken sensor! After topping up the oil and replacing the temperature sensor, the problem seems to be fixed. Total cost was 365€ Thank you for pointing me in the right direction.

I had similar symptoms on my old Renault Megane. The gearbox would act up, and the error codes pointed to a temperature sensor issue. Did you check the gearbox oil level? In my case it was simply too low.
