Peugeot 308 Camshaft Sensor Issue

My 2012 Peugeot 308 gasoline engine is exhibiting some concerning symptoms. Starting has become a struggle, the engine often turns over several times before catching. It occasionally stalls when idling, particularly when cold. The check engine light is on and my Peugeot only has 22101 km on the clock. An OBDII scanner points towards a camshaft sensor issue. Could this be the encoder wheel issue? Has anyone else encountered similar difficulties with their 308?

Sounds familiar. I had a similar problem with my Opel Astra a few years back. Same symptoms: poor starting, stalling at idle, and the check engine light. The error code also pointed to the camshaft sensor. Did you check the wiring to the sensor? Sometimes a loose connection can cause these issues.

I did visually inspect the wiring, and it appeared to be intact. When you say 'similar problem', was it definitely the sensor itself that had failed, or could the encoder wheel on the camshaft also have been the culprit in your case?

In my case, it ended up being the camshaft sensor itself. Though the symptoms suggest it could be the encoder wheel as well. Given the symptoms and the error code, it's best to take it to a workshop for proper diagnosis. They'll be able to pinpoint the exact cause.

Following your advice, I took my 308 to a trusted workshop. As suspected, the camshaft sensor was indeed defective, likely due to a faulty encoder wheel as we feared. The repair, including parts and labor, set me back 695€! Thank you for your input and assistance!
