Peugeot 308 Rough Engine Stalling

My 2009 Peugeot 308 with a gasoline engine is running rough and stalls, especially when idling. The check engine light is on intermittently, and there's jerking when accelerating. It has 194635 km. I've checked the ignition coil cables and plugs, but found nothing obvious. Could a defective ignition coil be the cause?

I know exactly what you mean! I have a Peugeot 308 too, and I had very similar symptoms some time ago: rough running, stalling at idle, engine light on. I also suspected the ignition coils first. Have you read out the error codes? That would be the first step. In my case, the ignition coil on cylinder 3 was defective, but it could also be something completely different. How old are your spark plugs?

I did read the error codes. The diagnostic device indicated a misfire on cylinder 1. The spark plugs were replaced about 30,000 km ago. Could it really be the ignition coil even though the error message refers to cylinder 1 and not cylinder 3, as in your case? What exactly was the problem with your car?

Yes, a misfire doesn't necessarily mean the ignition coil of that cylinder is defective. The error code could be misleading. In my case, the engine also ran very rough, and the error message initially pointed to a different cylinder. I took my Peugeot to a workshop, and they quickly identified the defective ignition coil. I'd recommend you do the same; it's usually not worth tinkering with it yourself. A professional can diagnose the problem much more accurately.

I followed your recommendation and took my Peugeot to a workshop. They diagnosed and replaced the defective ignition coil on cylinder 1. The mechanic also found a loose connection on the ignition coil connector, which he repaired. The total cost was 95€. Now the engine runs smoothly again, and the jerking during acceleration is gone!
