Peugeot 4008 Low Brake Fluid

I've got a 2015 Peugeot 4008, diesel engine, with about 51,873 km on the clock. Recently, I've noticed the brake fluid level is low, and I'm getting some strange feedback from the brake pedal. Could this be related to worn brakes? Any thoughts before I take it in?

Summary of the thread

A 2015 Peugeot 4008 owner noticed low brake fluid levels and unusual brake pedal feedback, suspecting worn brakes as a potential cause. The issue could stem from worn brake pads or leaking brake lines, especially given the vehicle's mileage and overdue brake fluid replacement. It was advised to inspect for leaks and consider a brake fluid service. Ultimately, the brakes were confirmed worn, leading to their replacement and a fluid change, resolving the problem.

Low brake fluid coupled with unusual brake pedal feedback strongly suggests an issue within the hydraulic brake system. Given the mileage, worn brake pads or even slightly weeping brake lines could be the culprit. When was the last time the brake fluid was replaced, and have you observed any fluid leaks near the wheels or master cylinder?

Thanks for the quick reply. I haven't replaced the brake fluid since I bought the car, so it's probably overdue. As for leaks, I haven't spotted anything obvious, but I'll have another look around the wheels and master cylinder. If it's just worn pads, should I be worried about the fluid level dropping so much?

Considering the brake fluid hasn't been replaced, a service including fluid replacement is advisable. The fluid level dropping in conjunction with pad wear is normal, as the fluid compensates for the increased caliper piston travel. However, the level shouldn't drop drastically. Given your description, a thorough brake inspection at a qualified workshop is highly recommended to check for leaks and assess brake line integrity.

Took your advice and brought it to the workshop. Turns out the brakes were indeed worn, causing the fluid level drop. Got the brakes replaced and a fluid replacement, came out to 480€. Pedal feels much better now. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
