Peugeot 406 Automatic Transmission Converter Fault
Summary of the thread
A 2003 Peugeot 406 diesel is experiencing issues with the check engine and transmission indicator lights on, gearbox slipping, unclean shifts, and grinding noises during gear changes. These symptoms suggest a possible automatic transmission converter fault, especially since there was an engine surge prior to the issues. The problem was confirmed to be a complete automatic transmission converter failure, requiring professional repair.

Yes, the engine did surge a little bit prior to all the lights and noises. By converter fault, do you mean the whole automatic transmission converter?

Yes, it ended up being a complete automatic transmission converter failure for me. Given your symptoms, especially with the engine surge, it does sound very similar. You should get it to a workshop as soon as possible. I hope it’s not too serious!

You were spot on. The workshop confirmed it was indeed the automatic transmission converter. Repair cost me around 2120€. Appreciate the help!

I had almost the same symptoms on my 406 some time ago. Was it the torque converter fault in your case? Did you notice any engine surge or unusual behavior before these problems started? It could be a converter fault. Better get it checked.
