Peugeot 406 Engine Start Problem

My 2004 Peugeot 406 diesel won't start. It has 52171 km. I've checked for fuel leaks and the engine light, but no luck. Any ideas? I suspect battery cable connections.

Hey, I had a similar problem with my old Vauxhall Astra! Engine wouldn't crank, just dead. Turned out to be corroded battery terminals. Like a clogged artery, the juice couldn't flow properly! Give them a good clean with a wire brush and see if that helps. Did you check those?

When you mention 'corroded battery terminals,' how bad was the corrosion? Superficial, or more substantial? Were there any other symptoms, like dimming lights or unusual sounds, before it wouldn't start?

It was pretty bad, like green fuzz everywhere! No warning signs really, just suddenly wouldn't start one morning. If cleaning the terminals doesn't fix it, I'd say take it to a workshop. Could be something more serious. Don't want to fry anything!

I checked the battery terminals and found significant corrosion, just like you said. After cleaning and reconnecting, the engine starts fine. Repair cost was 155€. Your advice really helped!
