Peugeot 406 key battery low warning

Having drama with my 2000 Peugeot 406 diesel. The car keeps flashing up a 'key battery low' warning. Keyless access is completely dead, and when I plugged it into the diagnostics, it threw up an error code related to the key. Locking and unlocking is a pain now; sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. Mileage is sitting at 33232 km. I'm guessing the key fob battery is flat, right? Anyone else had this?

Summary of the thread

The issue with the 2000 Peugeot 406 diesel was a persistent 'key battery low' warning, leading to unreliable keyless access. The likely cause was identified as a flat battery in the key fob, especially since the original key was still in use. The suggested solution was to test the spare key and replace the battery in the original key fob. After replacing the battery, the problem was resolved, confirming the initial diagnosis.

Sounds like a flat battery in the key fob is a likely culprit. They don't last forever! Is it the original key? Have you tried using the spare key to see if that works without issues? That would confirm it's definitely the battery in the main key.

Yeah, it's the original key, and I haven't tried the spare yet, good shout! If it is just the battery, is it something I can easily swap myself, or am I looking at some complicated reprogramming?

It should be just a battery swap. But if it's the original key from 2000, the battery might be a bit corroded in there. Given the error code and the intermittent unlocking, and that you need the car, I'd pop down to a workshop to get it checked out. It's a cheap fix and could save you a headache. My friend had a similar thing with his Citroen, and it turned out the transponder needed a nudge too, which he couldn't have done himself.

Cheers for the advice! You were spot on. Tried the spare; worked perfectly. So, I took the plunge and replaced the battery in the original key. All sorted now. Cost me a total of 37€ for the battery and fitting! Feeling pretty smug that it was such a simple fix.
