Peugeot 406 steering angle sensor issue

My 2004 Peugeot 406 diesel has done 257882 km and the steering's gone wonky. Feels like I'm wrestling a bear to turn the wheel, the power steering seems to be cutting out. Plus, the steering wheel is vibrating like crazy, especially at lower speeds. I'm suspecting the steering angle sensor. Anyone else had this kind of nightmare? Any ideas before I sell a kidney to afford a proper mechanic?

Sounds familiar. I had similar issues with my old Saab. Steering got heavy, and I could feel vibrations through the wheel. Turned out the coding on the steering angle sensor was corrupt. Might be worth checking that out.

When you say 'coding', what exactly do you mean? Is that something a regular garage can sort, or am I looking at specialist diagnostic equipment?

Yeah, the Saab needed a proper recalibration of the sensor using diagnostic equipment. I'd suggest taking it to a workshop with the right tools to check the sensor's readings and recode it if necessary. They should also check your wheel alignment while they're at it.

Took your advice and went to a local garage. They ran diagnostics, and you were spot on – the steering angle sensor coding was fried! They recoded it, checked the wheel alignment, and now it's driving like a dream again. Cost me 195€, but hey, beats fighting a bear every time I turn a corner. Thanks for the help!
