Peugeot 407 Coolant Loss

I've got a 2004 Peugeot 407 with a gasoline engine and I'm running into a coolant issue. The coolant level keeps dropping, and the check engine light is on. I scanned the car and there's an error code related to low coolant. I've checked for obvious leaks around the hoses and the radiator, but I can't see anything obvious. The mileage is at 80693 km. Any ideas?

I had a similar problem with my old Opel Astra. Coolant disappearing, but no visible leaks. Does your cooling fan work properly? Maybe it is related to the engine overheating?

That's interesting. The cooling fan seems to be working fine, but maybe it's not kicking in when it should? Where was the coolant going in your Astra if you couldn't see a leak?

Turned out it was a hairline crack in the cylinder head. The coolant was leaking internally and burning off. It was a pain to diagnose, but the workshop found it eventually. I would suggest checking compression. Probably it's better to take it to a professional.

Thanks for the tip! I took it to my local mechanic, and it turned out to be a leak in the water pump housing. They replaced it, topped up the coolant, and cleared the error code. Cost me 52€, but at least it's fixed now.
