Thanks for the reply. The engine light is on. When you had the problem, did you try forcing a DPF regeneration, or did you go straight to replacing the filter? And did a vehicle inspection reveal any sensor faults?

Given the engine light is on, I'd advise against forcing regeneration because you might cause more harm than good. You need a diagnostic check ASAP to pinpoint the sensor issue. In my case, the sensors were faulty because the DPF was excessively blocked. Replacement was unfortunately the only reliable fix. Based on my experience, you should get the sensor fault diagnosed immediately. If it relates to the DPF, replacement of the filter is the most likely course of action; the price quoted seems reasonable.

Thanks for your very useful advice! I did as you suggested and took it to a workshop. Turns out you were spot on; the DPF was defective, and the backpressure had triggered a sensor fault. New DPF fitted and the sensor replaced. It’s running perfectly again. Cost me 1550€ in total, as the garage initially suggested.

Hello, I have a Peugeot 407 as well with a diesel engine and experienced very similar symptoms. Reduced power and smoke usually point to a DPF problem. Has the engine light come on? It's possible a sensor fault is contributing, but those symptoms definitely align with DPF issues. Backpressure could be the underlying cause, so further investigation would be wise.
