Peugeot 407 petrol engine (2005): Problems with smoke development, engine performance and increased fuel consumption
(Translated from German)
Summary of the thread
A 2005 Peugeot 407 petrol engine is experiencing issues such as black smoke from the exhaust, engine stalling, loss of power, high fuel consumption, and a strong exhaust smell. These symptoms may be linked to fuel injection pressure or a clogged fuel filter. A suggested solution is to check and possibly replace the fuel filter, as a clogged filter can cause similar problems.

Hey, thanks for your answer. My 407 now has 148303 KM on it and has actually always performed faithfully. I can't report anything about changing the fuel filter, it's been a while since the last service. I'll clarify this with the garage and hope that helps. Thanks again for your tip!

No problem, I'm happy to help. Given the mileage of your 407, I would definitely suggest having the fuel filter checked or replaced. A clogged filter can indeed cause as many unpleasant symptoms as you have described. And changing the filter is usually not too expensive, at my regular garage it cost less than 50 euros, including labor. Maybe that will help you to get your problem under control. I'd be delighted if you could keep us up to date! Good luck!

Hey, great that you replied so quickly. Definitely reassuring that it doesn't necessarily have to be something major. I'll definitely take the fuel filter issue to the garage and hope that solves my problem. I'll definitely let you know what I find out. It's really great that you've helped me like this. Keep your helper's heart! See you then and thanks again!

Before considering an engine and gearbox replacement, which is a significant expense, I recommend checking a few things first. Start by inspecting the transmission fluid level and condition, as low or dirty fluid can cause shifting issues. Also, have the engine checked for any fault codes that might indicate specific problems. If the smoke is black, it could be related to a fuel system issue, while blue smoke might indicate oil burning. Please update us on your findings or if you have any further questions.

Hi, I had a very similar problem with my Peugeot 407, diesel, built in 2003. I would classify my knowledge of cars as poor, so I always rely on a reliable garage. In my case, an error entry was found after changing the fuel filter. This was the cause of the problems you described. My garage fixed the problem and charged 45 euros for it. Can you give me some more information about your car? What is the mileage? Has the fuel filter been changed recently? This could help to identify the problem more precisely.
