Peugeot 407 Power Loss Battery Light

Hi, I'm having trouble with my 2009 Peugeot 407 diesel. I've noticed a serious drop in engine power, and the battery warning light keeps popping up. Starting the car is difficult, sometimes it barely turns over, and the lights are dim or flickering. I scanned for error codes and found some relating to low voltage. I think the generator is going bad, but I wanted other opinions before tearing things apart.

Greetings! Your symptoms do point towards a charging system issue. Considering the age and mileage (77608 km) of your Peugeot, a failing generator is definitely a prime suspect. However, have you checked the condition of your battery itself? A failing battery can sometimes mimic alternator problems. Also, are all the battery terminals clean and properly tightened? A poor connection can cause similar issues.

Thanks for the quick response! I did check the battery terminals; they're clean and tight. The battery itself is about three years old, but I haven't had it properly load tested. Is there a reliable way to test the generator output myself, or would you recommend taking it to a shop for a diagnosis?

Given your expertise, you might be able to perform a rudimentary voltage test on the generator while the engine is running. However, a proper diagnosis requires specialized equipment to assess the generator's output under load and check for internal faults. Considering the potential for misdiagnosis and further complications, I would strongly advise consulting a qualified workshop. It sounds like the generator is defective and a proper replacement may be needed.

Thanks for confirming my suspicions! I appreciate the advice. I took it to a trusted mechanic, and you were spot on – the generator was indeed defective and needed replacing. The final bill came to 960€, ouch! But at least the car is running smoothly again.
