Peugeot 407 rough running cold starts

I'm pulling my hair out here. I've got a 2004 Peugeot 407 diesel, and lately it's been running rough when I first start it up, especially on these cold mornings. Mileage is sitting at 157946 km. I've got an error code popping up, plus the fuel consumption has definitely gone up. Feels like it's barely ticking over until it warms up. After digging, I reckon it's the PTC heater playing up. Anyone else had similar issues? It's like it's breathing cold air!

Sounds familiar. I've got a 407 diesel too and had similar symptoms last winter. Rough running on cold starts, and the fuel consumption was noticeably worse. Did you notice if the heating inside the car takes longer to warm up as well? It could be the heating element...

Yeah, now that you mention it, the heater does seem to be taking its sweet time to actually get warm! So, you reckon it's definitely the electric auxiliary heater then? Where did you start looking to diagnose it? Is there a way to test it before I start ripping things apart?

That's what it was in my case, but I'm no mechanic. I went straight to a workshop - they confirmed it was the PTC heater not working properly. Best get it checked properly, these modern heaters can be a pain to diagnose without the right gear.

Appreciate the input! I took it to my local garage and they ran some tests. Turns out you were spot on – the PTC heater was indeed defective. Quoted me 350€ for the repair. Bit of a sting, but at least I know what the problem is now.
