Yes, the mechanic mentioned the crankshaft sensor as the likely culprit. Did replacing the sensor resolve the issue for you? Was there anything else that needed to be addressed?

Yes, replacing the crankshaft sensor fixed it for me. If the reference value is off, it's almost always the sensor. Since you mentioned reduced power and higher fuel consumption, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop. They will probably know better.

The crankshaft sensor was faulty. Replacing the sensor fixed all the issues. The total repair cost was 340€.

I had something similar happen in my 5008. Same symptoms, engine light and all. They mentioned something about the crankshaft and cam sensor needing to be in sync. Was the code specifically pointing to the crankshaft sensor?
