Peugeot 5008 rough running exhaust smell

I've got a 2012 Peugeot 5008, gasoline engine, with about 222858 km on the clock. Recently, the engine's been running really rough. The check engine light is on, and I get a noticeable jerking when I try to accelerate. I scanned it and there's an error stored. Could it be something simple like spark plugs or the air filter?

Sounds familiar! I had a similar issue with my old Opel Astra, although it was a diesel. Check engine light, the whole shebang. Have you noticed any weird smells, maybe like exhaust fumes, or anything else unusual besides the jerking? Could be an engine misfire, but could also be something with the fuel pump or even the ignition coil. Anything like that crossed your mind?

Weird smells, hmm... now that you mention it, I have noticed a faint exhaust smell sometimes, especially when the engine is cold. An engine misfire would make sense with the jerking. How did you figure out what was wrong with your Astra?

The smell is a big indicator! For me, it turned out to be a tiny leak in the exhaust system. It was causing all sorts of havoc with the engine management system. Honestly, I'd get it checked by a workshop. Those leaks can be tricky to find, and they can cause more damage if you leave them unattended. Better safe than sorry!
