Peugeot 607 Transmission Problems

My 2002 Peugeot 607 diesel with 245811 km is having transmission issues. Paddle shifters don't work, gearbox slips, unclean shifts, grinding noises. Paddle shifters are slow, and the gearbox is in emergency mode. Error memory says defective transmission control unit. Could that be right? Anyone else?
