Peugeot 806 Gear Shift Indicator Problems

Hey, I'm really struggling with my 2001 Peugeot 806 with a gasoline engine. The gear shift indicator display has gone completely bonkers! I can't engage any gears, and the automatic transmission is shifting all over the place as if it were making up its own mind. Sometimes it feels like the gearbox is slipping, and other times the shifts are really rough. To make things worse, there's this awful grinding noise when it tries to change gears. I plugged in an OBD reader, and it's throwing up all sorts of error codes related to the transmission. The gear selection display in the speedometer is just blank. I'm thinking it might be the control unit, but I'm not sure where to start looking. Has anyone else experienced something like this? Any ideas?

Wow, that sounds like a nightmare! I had a similar issue with my 806. The gear indicator was acting up, and the transmission was doing all sorts of weird things. It felt like driving a car possessed! I am not a mechanic, but I do like analogies, and from my point of view, it was like the car was trying to play the piano with boxing gloves on. Was really unsure what was going on back then. Have you checked the simple stuff like the fluid level in the transmission? It might be worth a look before you start tearing into the control unit.

Thanks for the suggestion! I did check the transmission fluid, and it seems to be at the correct level. It's a bit dark, but not burnt or anything. When you say you had a similar issue, was it exactly the same symptoms, or were there any differences? And did you manage to fix it yourself, or did you take it to a mechanic?

Yeah, the symptoms sound almost identical to what I was experiencing. The crazy shifting, the grinding noises, the blank display – the whole nine yards. Honestly, I tried a few things myself, but in the end, I had to bite the bullet and take it to a workshop. They plugged it into their diagnostic system and quickly identified the problem as a faulty control unit. It wasn't a cheap fix, but it sorted out all the issues.

Okay, thanks for sharing your experience! Sounds like I'm probably looking at a similar control unit issue. I'll take it to a reputable mechanic and get a proper diagnosis. Based on what you and the OBD reader are saying, I am mentally preparing for a control unit replacement. They quoted me around 1000€ for the parts and labor. Hopefully, that will solve the problem, and I can finally get back on the road!
