Porter Camshaft Sensor Issue

My 2004 Hyundai Porter, diesel engine, is acting up. It's got 93468 km on the clock. Lately, it's been a pain to start, stalls out at idle sometimes, and the check engine light is on. I'm suspecting it might be the camshaft sensor. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

Summary of the thread

A 2004 Hyundai Porter with a diesel engine is experiencing starting difficulties, stalling at idle, and a check engine light, suggesting a potential camshaft sensor issue. The symptoms align with common camshaft sensor problems, but a faulty crankshaft sensor could also be responsible. Without diagnostic tools, it's challenging to determine the exact cause, so professional diagnosis is recommended. Ultimately, the issue was confirmed to be the camshaft sensor and encoder wheel, which were repaired, resolving the problem.

Sounds like a classic camshaft sensor issue with those symptoms. Has the check engine light given you any specific error codes? That would really help narrow things down. A faulty crankshaft sensor could also cause similar problems, so it's worth checking that too. How mechanically inclined are you? Do you have the tools to check the sensor's resistance or signal?

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't pulled the error codes yet – that's next on my list. I'm fairly handy, but I don't have a scope to check the signal. Is there an easy way to tell for sure if it's the camshaft sensor versus the crankshaft sensor without getting too deep into diagnostics?

Okay, without a scope, it's tricky to pinpoint which sensor is failing definitively. Given the stalling at idle, the camshaft position sensor is the more likely culprit. The encoder wheel on the camshafts are prone to defects. But honestly, at this point, with those symptoms and without the proper diagnostic tools, you're probably best off taking it to a reputable shop. They can properly diagnose the issue and prevent you from throwing parts at the problem. Do you know when it was changed last time?

Appreciate the advice. You're right, probably best to leave this to the pros. Took it to the workshop, and they confirmed it was indeed the camshaft sensor and the encoder wheel had issues. Cost me 695€ for the repair, but at least it's running smoothly again. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!
