Presage Reduced Engine Power Warning Light

Hi. I have a 2000 Nissan Presage, diesel engine, with only 50441 km on the clock. Recently, I've been experiencing reduced engine power, and a warning light keeps popping up on the speedometer. Starting the car has become a real chore, and the lights are flickering like crazy. I scanned for errors, and there's something stored in the error memory. Could this be a generator issue?

Sounds like a classic alternator issue. Have you checked the serpentine belt to make sure it's in good condition and properly tensioned? A slipping belt can cause the alternator to not charge correctly, leading to all sorts of electrical problems. Also, what's the battery voltage like?

Thanks for the quick reply! I haven't checked the serpentine belt, but that's a good shout. Where exactly should I be looking to see if the belt is in good condition and properly tensioned? As for the battery voltage, how do I check that? Any specific tool needed?

You're looking for cracks, fraying, or any signs of wear on the belt. Tension-wise, it shouldn't deflect too much when you push on it. As for battery voltage, you'll need a multimeter. If you're not comfortable doing these checks yourself, it might be best to take it to a workshop. A defective generator could cause all the symptoms you're having.

Okay, that makes sense. Thanks for the advice. I think I'll take it to a workshop to get it checked out properly. The error memory also pointed in the direction of the generator being defective. They quoted me 960€ for an alternator replacement. Thanks again!
