Primastar transmission issues
Summary of the thread
A 2002 Nissan Primastar diesel is experiencing starting issues, a check engine light, and occasional gearbox slippage, with a transmission error code indicating a potential problem with the parking position. Possible causes include a defective control unit or a faulty sensor. Suggested solutions involve checking the transmission fluid level and seeking a professional diagnostic at a workshop to determine if the issue is with the sensor or the control unit.

Thanks for the tip! I haven't checked the fluid level yet. Is it easy to do on the Primastar? Was it just low fluid that fixed your Espace, or was there more to it?

Checking the fluid is usually straightforward, there should be a dipstick somewhere near the transmission. But honestly, low fluid was just a symptom for me. The underlying issue was a faulty sensor in the transmission. I'd suggest taking it to a trusted workshop to get a proper diagnostic, as it could be the sensor or the whole control unit. Prepare for a bill, though.

Thanks a lot for the insight! Looks like I'm off to the workshop then. I was quoted around 1000€ for the repair if it's the control unit, which seems likely. Fingers crossed it's just a sensor!

Sounds rough. I had a similar issue with my old Renault Espace. Same symptoms, engine wouldn't start sometimes, and the check engine light was always on. The error code pointed to a transmission issue. Have you checked the transmission fluid level? That was the first thing my mechanic checked.
