Primera VANOS Solenoid Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2007 Nissan Primera was experiencing a check engine light, poor fuel consumption, and sluggish performance, suspected to be due to a faulty inlet VANOS solenoid or power supply issue. The problem was confirmed to be a faulty VANOS solenoid, which was replaced by a mechanic. After the replacement and clearing of error codes, the vehicle's performance and fuel consumption returned to normal.

Oil sludge, huh? I hadn't thought of that. Where exactly should I be looking for this sludge? And if it is sludge, is it something I can clean myself, or am I looking at a bigger job involving the timing chain?

While it is theoretically possible to clean it yourself, it requires a high degree of mechanical competence and the correct tools. Given the potential for further damage, particularly to the timing chain, I would strongly recommend consulting a qualified workshop. Considering the symptoms and your diagnosis, it's likely the VANOS solenoid itself, or the wiring, but a proper inspection is crucial. A replacement at the workshop will likely cost you around 250€.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to a mechanic, and you were spot on. Turns out it was a faulty VANOS solenoid. They replaced it, cleared the error codes, and now she's running like a champ again. Fuel consumption is back to normal too. Cheers!

I had a similar problem with my Primera, though I didn't do the troubleshooting myself. Based on the symptoms you've described, especially the check engine light and fuel consumption increase, I suspect you are correct about the VANOS solenoid. Have you checked for any oil sludge? I've read that can sometimes gunk things up and cause VANOS failure.
