Prisma Generator Failure

I'm having trouble with my 2007 Chevrolet Prisma, gasoline engine. I think my generator is failing. I'm getting reduced engine power, the battery warning light is on, and it's hard to start. Plus, the lights are flickering. My OBD reader is showing an error. Does this sound like a defective generator? Has anyone else experienced this?

Summary of the thread

A 2007 Chevrolet Prisma owner suspects a generator failure due to reduced engine power, a battery warning light, difficulty starting, and flickering lights. These symptoms, along with an OBD error, suggest a defective generator. A fellow owner advises checking for voltage drop at the generator terminals, with readings below 13.5-14.5 volts indicating a problem. Following this advice, the issue is confirmed and resolved at a workshop, restoring the vehicle's functionality.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

That sounds familiar! I had the same symptoms in my Prisma: weak lights and engine hesitation. Have you checked for any voltage drop when the engine is running? It could give you a clearer picture of what's going on. In my case, it was a classic alternator issue, and it manifested in funky ways.

Voltage drop? I haven't checked that. Where did you measure the voltage, and what reading confirms a generator problem? I'm trying to avoid just replacing parts, because the starter motor seems fine.

Think of your car's electrical system like a circulatory system. The battery is like the heart, and the alternator keeps the blood pumping. When the 'heart' isn't getting enough 'blood', things go haywire. I measured the voltage at the generator terminals with the engine running. You're looking for a reading lower than 13.5-14.5 volts. If it's dropping way below that, especially under load, then you've likely found your problem. I'd recommend getting it checked out by a trusted workshop. Engine misfire may occur.

Thanks! That voltage test advice was helpful. I took it to my local workshop, and you were right – it was the generator. 960€ later, everything is running smoothly again. I appreciate you sharing your experience; it saved me guesswork!
